Travelers who enjoy getting off the beaten path will appreciate the greater Yellowstone area’s large number of interpretive centers.

In Cody, Wyoming, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center offers five museums under one roof, and provides a comprehensive history of the Yellowstone region. The Draper Museum of Natural History, in particular, offers interpretive exhibits and educational programming.

While in Cody, don’t miss the Buffalo Bill Dam Visitor Center. In 1910, the Buffalo Bill Dam, at 325-feet, was the tallest in the in the world. It was listed in the National Register of Historical Places in 1973. The Buffalo Bill Dam Visitor Center is a must-see.

At the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, in Thermopolis, there are not only fossilized dinosaurs to examine, but also a dig site and a preparation lab.

Another interpretive center near Yellowstone is at Sinks Canyon State Park near Lander, Wyoming.

The National Historic Trails Center in Casper tells the story of the Oregon, Mormon, Bozeman and Overland trails, among others, with interactive displays.

The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center is located in Great Falls, Montana.
