May in Yellowstone (The End)

In 2011 I made three trips to Yellowstone National Park in the month of May. Some years I make even more trips, but the cold spring with plenty of new snow accumulation made for an odd year. Normally all of the snow (excluding the passes) is melted by Memorial Day Weekend, but not this year. Up to this point in the year (September) my end of May trip was, by far, the best trip of the year for me.

A Grizzly Bear enjoys a vole she caught while her cub of the year sits on her back near Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS in aperture priority mode with an exposure bias of + 1 2/3 at ISO400, f/5.0, and 1/160th of a second. The camera was mounted on a Gitzo 3540XLS and Induro GHB2 gimbal head with custom long lens support.

A Sow and Cub Grizzly Bear hunt for voles near Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS in aperture priority mode with an exposure bias of + 1 2/3 at ISO100, f/11, and 1/20th of a second. The camera was resting on a beanbag.

A pair of Grizzly Bears whisper sweet nothings near Steamboat Point in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS in manual mode at ISO400, f/8.0, and 1/500th of a second. The camera was mounted on a Gitzo 3540XLS and Induro GHB2 gimbal head with custom long lens support.

A Grizzly Bear (called "White Claws") walks around Steamboat Point's thermal features in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS + 1.4TC III in manual mode at ISO200, f/6.3, and 1/400th of a second. The camera was mounted on a Gitzo 3540XLS and Induro GHB2 gimbal head with custom long lens support.

The Alpha Male of the Lamar Canyon Wolf Pack howls to rally the troups to try and take back their carcass from a Grizzly Bear in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS + 1.4TC III in aperture priority mode with an exposure bias of + 2 at ISO400, f/6.3, and 1/400th of a second. The camera was mounted on a Gitzo 3540XLS and Induro GHB2 gimbal head with custom long lens support.

A Black Wolf stares from the tree line near Mary Bay during a snow storm in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS + 1.4TC III in aperture priority mode with an exposure bias of + 2/3 at ISO400, f/7.1, and 1/160th of a second. The camera was resting on a beanbag.

A Short-tailed Weasel along Sedge Bay in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS + 1.4 TC III in aperture priority mode with an exposure bias of +1 at ISO200, f/5.6, and 1/400th of a second. The camera was resting on a beanbag.

A Cinnamon Teal forages for food in a pond along Swan Lake Flats in Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 500/4.0L IS in manual mode at ISO800, f/6.3, and 1/125th of a second. The camera was resting on a beanbag.

The sun sets over Yellowstone Lake as the snow and ice begin to loosen their grip on Yellowstone National Park. Captured with a Canon 7D with 70-200/2.84.0L IS II in aperture priority mode with an exposure bias of – 1/3 at ISO200, f/7.1, and 1/100th of a second. The camera was resting on a beanbag.

Was I kidding? Best trip of the 2011?
