Opening and Closing of Roads in Yellowstone

Road Opening - for 2007
April 20, 2007 West side roads open to motor vehicles. Mammoth to Norris Junction to Madison Junction to Old Faithful; Madison Junction to West Entrance; Norris Junction to Canyon
May 4, 2007 Canyon to Lake; Lake to East Entrance
May 11, 2007 Tower to Tower Fall; Lake to West Thumb; West Thumb to Old Faithful; South to Old Faithful.

Road Closing - for 2007
Autumn:
The only park road that remains open to wheeled vehicles all winter is the road from Gardiner, Montana, at the North Park Entrance to Silver Gate & Cooke City, Montana, near the Northeast Park Entrance. If your vacation to Yellowstone National Park will bring you to the area from east of Cooke City, Montana, please note that the route within Yellowstone from this location is NOT possible during the winter season.

Early October
The route of Sylvan Pass to East Entrance closes to public travel.

Mid-October
Roads close to the public at Tower Fall to Chittenden Road.

Early November
All other park roads close at 9:00 p.m. except the route between the North Entrance/Gardiner, Montana, and the Northeast Entrance/Silver Gate & Cooke City, Montana. The first Sunday in November is the last full day of travel so in 2007 it will be November 7.

The North Entrance road to Upper Mammoth Terrace and Mammoth to Tower Junction and to the Northeast Entrance will remain open to wheeled vehicles year-round. Snow tires and/or chains may be required.

Please Note: The section of the Beartooth Highway (Highway 212), between the junction of Highway 296 and Red Lodge, Montana, closes in winter on a schedule determined by the amount of snowfall. Travel between Red Lodge and the Northeast Entrance is not possible on Highway 212 until it opens again in the spring.

Please refer to Yellowstone's Opening and Closing Dates for Facilities, at http://www.nps.gov/yell/cal.htm, and Road Construction Schedule, at http://www.nps.gov/yell/planvisit/orientation/travel/roadclos.htm, for information regarding closures not related to the weather.
