Located in northeast Wyoming at the base of the Big Horn Mountain Range, Buffalo is a historic Old West town that lies along the famous Bozeman Trail. The town was founded in 1878 when Fort McKinney was established overlooking the Clear Creek valley.

Owen Wister, author of The Virginian, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, “Buffalo Bill” Cody, Tom Horn, Teddy Roosevelt and Calamity Jane all stayed here.
Johnson County is riddled with historic locations, such as the Fort Phil Kearny site where you can learn about the Fetterman Battle and the Wagon Box Fight.
Visit the Outlaw Caves, hideout to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, or the famous TA Ranch where the Johnson County Cattle War came to a dramatic end. You can still see the original bullet holes in the historic old barn where the “regulators” made a last stand against the sheriff’s posse.
Explore the Great Medicine Man Museum (Jim Gatchell Museum), which is filled with collectables from the past, to learn about Johnson County’s western heritage.
