Hike to Wyoming's Shoshone Lake

Hike with the YellowstonePark.com team to Shoshone Lake above Lander, Wyo.,in the Shoshone National Forest. The lake is a huge, beautiful lake that's full of fish and flanked by beautiful views of the southern Wind River Range. This hike isn't for the light-hearted. In fact, most who use this trail are on an ATV. Our route started via Fairfield Hill, then to Pete's Lake, Twin Lakes and Shoshone Basin, before arriving to Shoshone Lake, at the end of a 4,000-foot gain over 12 miles. After walking along the lake, ascend Cyclone Pass, a lung-buster, before arriving at the most spectacular view in the area, where you can see the entire southern Wind River Range before you with Shoshone Lake in the foreground. Next, descend the "Chute" (for too many miles), to Suicide Point, then let the lead out in Mexican Creek and Baldwin Creek. All told, 24 miles of hiking. Ambitious but also a great adventure!
File Download (60 min / 53.03 MB)

Virtually hike along with some of the YellowstonePark.com team on an awesome trail in Wyoming's Wind River Range. The trailhead to the Cirque of Towers via Jackass Pass is at the Big Sandy Opening. Hikers enjoy a 6-mile flat hike to Big Sandy Lake before ascending the steep, rocky, exposed Jackass Pass to the Cirque of the Towers. The Cirque was first made famous among climbers across the world when an article was published in a 1950 magazine. This hike is an 18-mile round trip and the views are among the best in the Lower 48. Along this hike, YellowstonePark.com talks to visiting hikers about technology – the good and the bad of it.
Recently, YellowstonePark.com's Shelli Johnson went on her first fly-fishing adventure. Guided by Tim Wade, owner of North Fork Anglers in Cody, Wyoming, Johnson was able to catch the two biggest fish she's ever caught – after only 2 hours of fly-fishing! First, Wade provides an introduction to fly-fishing, including how to get outfitted for a day on the river, and the basics of fly-fishing. The two spent a couple of hours on the North Fork of the Shoshone River, which is located off the most scenic stretch of road in America, en route to Yellowstone Park's East Entrance. On the way to the river, Wade shares his philosophy on the sport and stewardship and explains why a person might consider fly-fishing and discusses the differences between fly-fishing and spin rod fishing. Then, you'll witness Johnson's first catch with a fly rod. After just a short time of fly fishing, Johnson was "hooked." Hopefully you learn a little, are intrigued to try fly-fishing and feel as if you're with Johnson and Wade as you listen to this podcast. To enjoy your own guided fly-fishing adventure in the heart of Yellowstone country, go to NorthForkAnglers.com or call Tim at (307) 527-7274.
U.S. Senator Craig Thomas, of Wyoming, recently stopped by the Yellowstone Journal Corporation and YellowstonePark.com offices in Lander, Wyoming, to talk with Shelli Johnson about our national parks. Thomas was raised on a ranch in Wapiti, Wyo, which is near the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park and was elected to Congress in a special election in 1989 when Dick Cheney was appointed Secretary of Defense. Thomas won his first term as senator in 1994 and won re-election in 2000. He's currently running for re-election again. Among other important roles, Sen. Craig Thomas is the chairman of the National Parks Subcommittee. This podcast contains the conversation the Senator had with the Yellowstone Journal and YellowstonePark.com. It's a conversation about how the urbanization of our society will mean an increased value in our national parks, the way a national park vacation has changed, the future of our national parks, and global warming.
File Download (53 min / 18.25MB)

There is a mysterious and unique culture that has a definite presence in Yellowstone country. The Basque people are originally from the Pyrenees Mountain region that forms a natural border between France and Spain. Many of these people immigrated to the western United States bringing their exceptional sheep herding skills and vibrant culture with them. Every year, Basques from all over the world congregate for a fantastic festival that celebrates their culture and heritage. This year, it was held in Buffalo, Wyoming, a beautiful western town settled in the Big Horn Mountain Range.
File Download (30 min / 10.36MB)

On July 14, 2006, YellowstonePark.com's Ryan Johnson discovered one of the best ways to see Yellowstone country – by hot air balloon – during the 26th annual Riverton, Wyoming Rendezvous. Every year, Riverton hosts a Balloon Rally that attracts dozens of balloon operators from all over the country. I had the opportunity to take my first balloon ride and see the beautiful landscape of Wind River Country from 600 feet up! This is truly a spectacle from the ground as well. Other events that occur during these 10 days are a rodeo, a car and bike show, and fireworks just to name a few. Listen to the end of the podcast and you will hear three of us "first-timers" become christened during a ceremony following our flight. Thanks so much to my pilot Ed Potthoff for the flight!
File Download (41 min / 13.98MB)

On July 13, Shelli Johnson of YellowstonePark.com and Yellowstone Journal, went on a tour with Jeff Swanson, of Fremont County Firewise. As fires were already raging across the West during this recording, the timing was ideal for getting an education on how homeowners and cabin owners can take precautions and actions to make their homes and properties more defensible in the event of a wildfire. In this podcast, Johnson and Swanson visit a mountain subdivision above Sinks Canyon State Park and Lander, Wyo. Johnson and Swanson walk the property and examine all the fuel hazards and problems and discuss solutions and prevention measures that should and could be taken to help prevent the cabin from being lost in a fire. Swanson describes the fire hazards and fuel types that exist on the 7.2-acre mountain property, where a small rustic cabin is situated. Listeners across the country and world might benefit from the information shared in this podcast in taking preventive measures to help defend your property against a wildfire.
Sinks Canyon State Park, a beautiful state park located 6 miles SW of Lander, Wyoming, is named for a sink hole, the "Sinks", which is a limestone cavern that the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River rushes into and disappears before resurfacing a 1/4-mile down the road at the "Rise." The Sinks is a geologic wonder and a bit of a mystery. This podcast is on-location coverage of the recent "dye test" performed by Geology professors and students from throughout the U.S. The dye test is a test where geologists pour some colored dye into the Sinks and then aims to determine if it resurfaces with the river, down the canyon a little ways, if the same volume of water re-enters the river that enters at the Sinks, if the water's composition changes and whether the water's temperature changes during its route. Listen to this podcast to find out how the dye test came out. This was the second dye test ever to be performed at Sinks Canyon and local Shelli Johnson was excited to be on hand to cover the event.
File Download (72 min / 24.80MB)

Well you certainly can at the 1838 Mountain Man Rendezvous in Riverton, Wyoming. YellowstonePark.com's Shelli Johnson and Ryan Johnson had the opportunity to talk with local mountain men and even got to participate in some activities. This was definitely a learning experience as everyone involved was more than helpful in explaining the history behind rendezvous and the tremendous significance of the site itself. The 1838 Rendezvous is held on the same grounds that famous mountain men like Jim Bridger and Jedediah Smith congregated with others. This rendezvous has something for everyone from black-powder shooting, knife and tomahawk throwing, and seminars to learn the ways of the mountain man. It's a must for any enthusiast of the Old West!
File Download (74 min / 25.40MB)

Recently, Yellowstone Journal/YellowstonePark.com publisher Shelli Johnson stumbled upon a group of 24 young men huddled around a pay phone in her small town of Lander, Wyoming. Whenever there's a "crowd" spotted in the town of only 7,000 people, it garners the attention of locals. Johnson could sense a story and asked the boys what their story was. Typically large groups of young kids around a pay phone means they're getting ready to head into the mountains for a while, or that they just returned to civilization from such an expedition. So, I asked if they were headed into the mountains or just coming out. This question led to a terrific conversation and podcast. The boys are junior leaders, or counselors in training, for Camp Thunderbird, based in Bemidji, Minnesota. Close like brothers, these boys have been enjoying the summer camp for five years now. This year they're backpacking for 5 days in Wyoming's rugged and remote Wind River Range. When they get out of the Wind Rivers, they'll be meeting up with a Camp Thunderbird girls' group in Jackson Hole to celebrate 4th of July, before taking a 3-day climbing expedition in the Teton Range, and continuing on to Oregon, where the group will do some public service/stewardship work and then head into Alaska's backcountry for three days. It's a 6-week trip and it was a joy to visit with these young boys. Check it out.
File Download (28 min / 9.72MB)

Mountain Lions, with Chuck Anderson

Yellowstone Journal and YellowstonePark.com recently attended a presentation by Chuck Anderson about mountain lions. This podcast covers that presentation. Chuck Anderson, of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, is an expert on mountain lions. He shares with us information about the animal, including facts about regions and terrain the mountain lion inhabits, what the carnivore eats and how it hunts, as well as interesting facts about how mountain lions kill prey, mark and protect their territories, and more. According to Anderson, mountain lions' presence throughout the Western U.S. is growing and expanding eastward. Mountain lions have been sighted in Iowa and Nebraska, as well as North Dakota and South Dakota. At the same time, our human population is also growing and expanding. The mountain lion, although formidable and increasingly abundant, rarely comes into contact with, or is seen by humans. However, attacks do occur. If you encounter a mountain lion, keep eye contact. Do not turn your back and run. Keep eye contact, and make yourself look larger than you are. Jump up and down and make noises and "try to convince the mountain lion you are not food," advises Anderson.
File Download (73 min / 25.11MB)

Laramie, Wyoming, often called "An Outdoor Town with an Outlaw Past," certainly has its share of Western culture! We had the opportunity to visit during the 1st Annual Western Outlaw Festival-Butch Cassidy and the Celtic Connection. From June 10-18, Laramie hosted a variety of events that thrusted visitors back in time to the days of the Old West. Gunfights, old-time western music, cowboy poets, saloon piano players, and wagon rides were just a taste of all the authentic activities visitors took part in. There was certainly more to do than time allowed, but listen in and you'll get an idea of what the Old West must have been like!
File Download (57 min / 19.48MB)

Recently, YellowstonePark.com visited Cheyenne, Wyoming, to discover its attractions. We sat down with Darren Rudloff, Executive Director of the Cheyenne Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, to talk about the abundant attractions and activities for visitors to the Cheyenne area. One of the major attractions in Cheyenne is the Cheyenne Depot, a fully restored national landmark that happens to be a fully functional train depot as well. We also talked to Fred Gamst, a local social anthropologist and railroad expert who explained some of the rich train history that remains in Cheyenne. We also received an insightful tour of the depot itself from its events coordinator, Pam Crochet, and even spoke to some visitors who were exploring the depot. Listen closely and you will be able to hear trains whistle and pass through on their way either east or west!
File Download (56 min / 19.33MB)

The Relay for Life cancer fundraiser event that has grown so popular in the U.S. had it's Fremont County Relay for Life in Lander, Wyo., on June 9-10 this year. This is a fantastic event for an important cause. The Relay for Life kicked off with a Survivor Lap around the track, followed by a Caregiver lap. Then, with live music performed in the background, people comprising 32 business-sponsored "Relay" teams started walking and logging laps for the purpose of raising awareness and money for finding a cure for cancer. Lander's event was awesome. There were great eats all night long, sumo wrestling, karoake, comedians, and more. The event, hosted in Lander, a town of only 7,000 people, raised $63,000! It was a lot of fun and a lot of great people who came out for a wonderful cause.
File Download (49 min / 16.52MB)
