Day 1: Fossil Butte National Monument
From Salt Lake City, take I-15 north to UT 108 west. Continue to Antelope Island. Take US 108 east to UT 193 east to US 89 north to I-84 east. Merge on I-80 east, then take US 189 north to US 30 west. Continue to Fossil Butte.
Your tour’s first stop is Antelope Island State Park, where you can paddle a sea kayak, picnic, mountain bike, watch wildlife, and swim in the Great Salt Lake. Continue across the Wyoming line to Kemmerer and visit the Fossil Country Museum to prepare for Fossil Butte National Monument just down the road.
Day 2: Alpine, WY
Take US 30 west to WY 89 north. Continue on US 89 north to Alpine. Head north to the Flying Saddle Resort (page 95) for a day and night of fishing, horseback riding, and hiking. Finish the day with a steak and a dip in the resort’s hot tub.
Day 3: Grand Teton National Park
Take US 89 north to Jackson and Grand Teton National Park. Get ready for adventure in Jackson, where the activities range from adrenaline-packed whitewater rafting trips to laid-back fly-fishing. Continue north to Grand Teton National Park for wildlife-watching, hiking, and paddling.
Day 4: Yellowstone National Park
Continue on US 89 north to Yellowstone National Park. Spend the day experiencing the country’s first national park. Watch geysers, scope wildlife, go hiking, and much more at Yellowstone National Park.
Day 5: Pinedale, WY
Return to Jackson via US 287 south/US 89 south. Continue on US 191 south to Pinedale. Scenic Pinedale boasts views of the Wind River Range, 12-mile-long Fremont Lake, and the Museum of the Mountain Man.
Day 6: Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
Take US 191 south to I-80 west. Head south on WY-530 to Flaming Gorge. Go boating or fishing in the Green River at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Don’t miss the ancient petroglyph sites found along this 91-mile-long lake.
Day 7: Park City and Salt Lake City, UT
Return to I-80 west and drive to US 40 east. Take UT 248 west to Park City. Take UT 224 north to I-80 west. Continue into Salt Lake City. Your final drive takes you to Park City, a cultural and outdoor recreation hot spot. Try an alpine slide, zipline, bobsled, or luge ride at Utah Olympic Park, site of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Continue to Salt Lake City, where attractions range from Temple Square to the Clark Planetarium.
