Seasonal Closures:

Most Yellowstone roads are subject to annual winter closure to wheeled vehicles starting November through late April and into May due to winter conditions. This includes the road leading to the Old Faithful area and the Northeast Entrance near Cooke City east into Montana.

The only roads that remain open in the winter are those between the North Entrance and Cooke City, Mont., as well as the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and the parking area Upper Terraces.

  • Oct. 11, 2016: Dunraven Pass (Tower Fall to Canyon); Beartooth Pass (US 212 to Red Lodge, Montana) closed
  • Nov. 7, 2016: All roads except the road between the North Entrance and the Northeast entrance close at 8 a.m.
  • The North Entrance near Gardiner, Montana remains open year round.
  • The Northeast Entrance near Cooke City, Montana remains open year round, but since the Beartooth Highway is closed (see above), you can only access the entrance and Cooke City from within the park.

Visitors should expect delays of up to 30 minutes in most Yellowstone roads Memorial Day Weekend as well as Labor Day Weekend. For more traffic, construction and closures you can call the Yellowstone National Park 24-hour road condition hotline at (307) 344-2117. For seasonal closures and operating hours can be found here.
