Antelope Island under the Milky Way

Just north of Salt Lake City, Davis County is the perfect place to play in the beautiful state of Utah.

Start at Antelope Island State Park, which is on the Great Salt Lake. Home to bison, pronghorn and countless bird species, it’s a wildlife watcher’s paradise. As a designated Dark Sky Park, animals won’t be the only thing you’ll want to watch. The Milky Way arching over the lake will leave you in awe. Stop by The Bird in Syracuse on your way in and get a fried chicken picnic to enjoy at the park.

Every year in October cowboys roundup the bison at Antelope Island for vet checks and an auction. Starting on one side of the island and herding them into sorting pens at the other end, the cowboys give you a taste of the Wild West. Visitors line their cars up along the road to watch the bison on roundup day and then can watch the sorting process in the weeks to follow. Check the Utah State Parks website (stateparks.utah.gov/parks/antelope-island/bison-roundup/) for 2020 Roundup information.
