Idaho Stops on the Way

The West Side Story of Teton Valley and Grand Targhee Resort

With so much attention on the east side of the Tetons, leave the crowds behind and experience the top nine things to do on the Teton’s west side.

1. Teton Geotourism Center

Discover insider tips of what to do here, including the best places to see rodeo and do horsepacking trips. It’s at 60 S Main St. in Driggs, Idaho.

2. Teton Canyon

Catch outstanding views of the Grand Teton. From the North Teton Canyon trailhead, do the strenuous 11-mile roundtrip Table Mountain hike, which offers incredible views of the Grand Teton. From the South Teton Canyon trailhead, hike to Devil’s Stairs, a more moderate 8-mile out-and-back. Access the trailheads off of Ski Hill Road past Alta, Wyo.

3. Teton Aviation Center

If you don’t want to hike them, there’s another way to experience the mountains from up high. Scenic flights from the Teton Aviation Center in Driggs, Idaho, will put you up-close to rocky summits and steep cliffs.

4. Grand Targhee Bike Park

If windy singletrack is your thing, the Grand Targhee Bike Park offers 2,200 vertical feet of lift-serviced twists and turns. Keeping it more mellow? Another 47 miles of trails are ideal for biking, hiking and horseback riding.

5. Teton River Float

Hop on a paddleboard, raft or an inflatable tube to make the easy two-to-three-hour journey down the Teton River for spectacular views of the mountains, a cadre of different birds and—if you’re lucky—a thirsty moose, cooling off in the water just like you.

6. Eat at Grand Targhee

The Grand Targhee Resort offers luxurious patio dining with views of the mountains and dishes prepared with local ingredients.

7. Scenic Chairlift Ride

There’s no easier way to take in the scenery than by taking the Dreamcatcher chairlift to the 9,862-foot summit of Fred’s Mountain. Obviously you’ll have a panoramic view at the Tetons, but you’ll also see into parts of three states. Visit the Nature Center at the top.

8. Spud Drive-In Theater

Kick back in your seat with a cheeseburger and French fries as you watch a drive-in movie from the comfort of your car this summer. The Spud’s diner opens at 6:30 p.m. and movies start 20 minutes after sunset. If you rent a cabin on-site, you can watch the movie from your front porch.

9. Cozy Accommodations

Stay in a renovated cabin with a kitchen, a tipi, pitch your own tent or pull up your RV at Teton Valley Resort. Or stay slopeside or in a vacation rental through Grand Targhee Vacation Rentals.
