The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota, is the world’s largest mammoth research facility. Mammoths and other megafauna got trapped in a sinkhole and drown about 26,000 years ago. Their bones were buried and preserved.

Today a museum has covered the site with a roof. You can tour an active paleontological dig site and view Ice Age fossils exhibited as they are found.
