Feel the Rush at Rush Mountain Adventure Park

Nestled in the trees just 11 miles from Mount Rushmore National Memorial is Rush Mountain Adventure Park and Rushmore Cave.

You’ll find natural underground carvings and passageways in a cave, a mountain coaster among the trees, a virtual video game/ride, ziplines and a challenging agility/ropes course.

“We’ve worked hard to make it a fun family experience, a place to build memories,” says Ross Johnson, co-owner. “In most cases, it can be enjoyed by everyone from 5 to 85.”

Be sure to get the Play-All-Day wristband, which includes unlimited access to the rides/attractions, plus a guided cave tour, so you can play as long as you want. When you get hungry, get re-energized at Sparky’s Snackatorium with pizza, sandwiches and signature ice cream concoctions.

On the Rushmore Mountain Coaster, you’ll twist and turn through the pines of Rush Mountain with a beautiful view of the Black Hills. But what makes this different than other coasters is you determine your speed on your two-seated carts securely attached to rails. 

On the Soaring Eagle ZipRide, you’ll experience the sensation of flying, while speeding down the mountainside on a suspended cable. There are two formed seats for 2 riders, so you can share the fun with a friend or family member.

If you’re into video games or virtual reality, head to the Gunslinger 7D Interactive Ride at Rush Mountain. When the video starts, you’ll feel your seat move and the wind blowing in your hair as you go on one of three different adventurous journeys.  Shoot your laser gun at the bad guys that you encounter along the way for a chance to earn the highest score.

Then head to the Wingwalker Challenge Course where you put on a harness and test your balance and agility skills. This above-ground obstacle course features highline wires, planks, ziplines and more. Younger kids can check out Sky Tykes, a smaller obstacle course and a junior-sized zipline.

Then get out of the summer heat and cool down as you explore Rushmore Cave. The tour is a little more than an hour through caverns filled with stalactites, stalagmites and other formations. You can choose among a scenic walking tour, a flashlight tour, and for the extreme adventurer, a spelunking tour. Tours leave regularly. The highlight is the awe-inspiring Big Room.
