Backpacking in the Yellowstone Park Region

How to hike and camp in the backcountry of Yellowstone.

Enjoy the backcountry of Yellowstone on a scenic backpacking trip. A bit of trip planning is required as backcountry overnight permits and proper caution regarding bears are required in the park.

The summer season runs from Memorial Day Weekend to early September and permits are available at specific locations seven days a week. The fee is per-person, per night permit for all individuals 9 years of age or older. An Annual Backcountry Pass covers this fee for the calendar year in which the pass is purchased.

Applications submitted prior to April 1 are processed in random order by lottery. Reservations received after April 1 are processed in the order in which they are received.
