Watching the ever-reliable geyser is one of Yellowstone’s longstanding traditions. But aside from this great spectacle, what are some things you might be looking for that you don’t know you’re looking for? Head for the Wapiti Lake Trailhead just south of Upper Falls. When you walk along the trail, you’ll see two waterfalls, a couple of lakes, steaming fumaroles and mud pots. Since it’s off the beaten path, not many people venture out there, so you won’t be fighting the crowds. Be sure to stay on the trail to stay safe from fragile ground surrounding thermal features and carry bear spray because this trail goes through grizzly country.

2. Discover the Upper Geyser Basin alongside a national park service ranger.
